Background of the Study
Bipolar disorder is a severe mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings, including manic and depressive episodes. It affects approximately 1-2% of the global population (American Psychiatric Association, 2023). The disorder is highly debilitating and can lead to significant social, occupational, and psychological difficulties if not effectively managed. Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and ongoing support are essential to managing bipolar disorder and improving the quality of life for affected individuals.
Psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria play a critical role in providing care for individuals with mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder. Nurses in these hospitals are involved in the day-to-day management of patients, including administering medications, providing psychological support, and monitoring patients for signs of relapse. Despite the importance of nurses in managing bipolar disorder, there is limited research on their knowledge of the condition and their ability to manage patients effectively. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and management practices of nurses working in psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria, with a focus on bipolar disorder.
Statement of the Problem
Bipolar disorder is a complex and challenging condition that requires specialized knowledge and management. Nurses in psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria may not have sufficient training or understanding of the condition, which could lead to inadequate care and poor patient outcomes. The lack of standardized treatment protocols, coupled with the stigma surrounding mental illness in some Nigerian communities, may further complicate the management of bipolar disorder. This study seeks to evaluate nurses' knowledge of bipolar disorder and their management practices in psychiatric hospitals, aiming to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to enhance care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria, particularly those involved in the care of patients with bipolar disorder. The study will not include nurses working in general hospitals or non-psychiatric settings.
A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias. Additionally, the study's findings may not be generalizable to other countries or healthcare settings with different mental health care structures.
